Festival of Sails takes place Labor Day Weekend from Friday August 30th until Monday September 2nd. This popular San Diego event is an annual Labor Day, 4 day weekend event, with something for the whole family! This year’s festival features an expansive events area with all day fun including a Family Fun Zone, Petting Zoo, inflatables, face painting, food booths, beer gardens, and live on-stage entertainment.
During the Festival of Sail, 80-foot International America’s Cup boats will race each day from 11AM to 1:30PM. But don’t just sit on the sidelines and watch, you can man the controls and pitch in or even just sit back and relax on the actual boat! Take your pick from the Stars & Stripes/USA 34, which won the Citizen Cup in 1995, or the Abracadabra/ USA 54, which raced in the America’s Cup 2000.
Another great attraction during the festival is the Tall Ship Battle on San Diego Bay. A blast from the past, the Tall Ship Cannon Battle is a mock battle that includes an unbelievable sailing experience aboard select tall ships battling each other with black powder cannons. This is a rare opportunity to experience and participate in the exhilarating tactics once used by these ship’s crews during the Gold Rush of 1800! Built for speed and armed with heavy fire-power, these ships at the Festival of Sail San Diego truly know how to get the adrenaline pumping!
If the Tall Ship Battle is too much excitement for you to handle, the Festival of Sail also has a narrated Historic Bay Cruise. For 30 minutes, soak in some San Diego bay history on a harbor pilot that has shuttled the harbor for over 80 years! Other cruises include the 2 hour Mid-Day sails or 1.5 Twilight sails on a variety of participating boats.
All in all, this is an opportunity sail enthusiasts and non-alike will not want to miss out on! The fun starts at 9AM and continues until 7PM Friday through Sunday, and starts 9AM until 5PM on Monday. It is fun for the entire family and the LARGEST Tall Ship Festival on the West Coast for only $5 admission, so be sure to cruise on by the San Diego Bay this Labor Day Weekend!
